Fun Reed Corporation (headquartered in Toshima-ku, Tokyo; Keiichi Kobayashi, President; hereinafter "Fanreed") has been selected by the Cabinet Office for the "FY2023 MICHIBIKI(*1) Demonstration Project" to conduct a performance evaluation demonstration of a solution to improve the efficiency of power line inspection work using drones by utilizing the MADOCA-PPP(*2) high precision positioning augmentation service to address the electricity shortage problem in Vietnam. The project was adopted as a proposal for a performance evaluation demonstration of a solution to improve the efficiency of power line inspection work using drones, which utilizes the high-precision positioning augmentation service "MADOCA-PPP(*2)". This project is scheduled to be implemented from July 2023 to February 2024 in Japan and Hanoi, Vietnam.
This is the second time Fanreed has been selected for this project, following the "FY2019 Demonstration Experiment Using MICHIBIKI.
Current issue: Electricity shortage problem in Vietnam
Vietnam is one of the 10 countries in Southeast Asia where future economic growth is expected to be particularly rapid. In response to this urgent issue, the state-run Electricity Generating Company of Vietnam (EVN) is working on (1) expansion of the power grid and (2) improvement of power loss due to aging and inadequate existing power transmission lines. EVN is considering the use of a Vietnamese drone as a future drone to be used for this purpose.
Outline of the adopted demonstration project
(1) Project name
Performance evaluation demonstration of MADOCA-equipped drones for use in infrastructure inspections
(2) Outline of the demonstration project
This is a demonstration project to commercialize a drone-based infrastructure inspection solution business with the MADOCA-PPP's high-precision positioning functionality, to be conducted in collaboration with MAJ(*3), a Vietnamese drone manufacturer with a proven track record, as part of efforts to help solve the problem of electricity shortages in Vietnam. The project is a demonstration project for the commercialization of a drone-based infrastructure inspection solution business that adds the high-precision positioning function of MADOCA-PPP.
In the inspection of power grids, it is necessary to estimate the location of abnormalities such as damaged or melted power lines and broken strands. Infrastructure structures such as power grids have three-dimensional expanses, and accurately estimating the location of abnormalities in power lines is complex. Aiming to expand its business in Southeast Asia, MICHIBIKI will use this demonstration project as an opportunity to work on infrastructure inspection solutions in Vietnam.
1 MICHIBIKI is Japan's satellite positioning system (a system that calculates positional information using radio waves from satellites), which consists mainly of satellites in quasi-zenith orbit. In English, it is called QZSS (Quasi-Zenith Satellite System).
MADOCA-PPP calculates errors caused by positioning satellites based on observation data from domestic and overseas GNSS monitoring station networks, and transmits correction data using MICHIBIKI's L6 signal to provide a highly accurate positioning augmentation service that can be used in Asia and Oceania.

3 MAJ holds a drone manufacturing license from the Vietnamese Ministry of Defense, and is capable of handling the entire process from development to commercialization, and has the manufacturing capacity to meet customer needs. MAJ was introduced to us by the JETRO Hanoi office as a potential local partner for Fanreed's smart agriculture project in Vietnam, and we have decided to collaborate with MAJ as a local partner in this demonstration project.
