Hirohide Miyaoka Office (Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture; Representative: Hirohide Miyaoka), a Yose entertainment producer, will hold a Yose performance "Irifune-tei Senzo: The Works of Seicho Matsumoto" on November 5, 2023, at Oedo Nihonbashitei (Chuo-ku, Tokyo).

■Background of the event

Seicho Matsumoto is famous for his socially-conscious mystery novels in his later years, but he also wrote many historical novels, especially in his early years. His first work, "Saigofuda," was published before Seicho Matsumoto won the Akutagawa Prize. Saigo-Takamori returned to his hometown of Satsuma after losing the war to conquer Korea, and raised an army against the government in the Seinan Senso (Civil War). After the defeat of Saigo's army, it was dismissed as fiat money issued by the rebels, but as time settled down, the Meiji government began to consider the possibility of purchasing it.... However, as time settled down, there was a possibility that the Meiji government would buy them.... This is a masterpiece depicting the uproar over the "Saigo-note".

About "Irufune-tei Senzo: The Works of Seicho Matsumoto

Young rakugo storyteller Senzo Irifune-tei has been fascinated by Seicho Matsumoto's works since he was a student. He has already performed three of Seicho's works as Rakugo. The fourth of these works is the premiere of "Saigofuda".

Although Seicho Matsumoto's works seem to have nothing to do with Yose entertainment, Mikisuke Katsura III broadcast "The Left Arm" in the 1950s. In addition, Kanda Rozan II, a kodan (storyteller), performed many of Seicho's works as kodan (stories). There is an anecdote that when Royama Kanda II went to Seicho to ask for permission to perform his works, he was told, "I support people who are unfortunate.

The present performance was also approved by Seicho Matsumoto's side. Furthermore, we were allowed to use portraits taken by photographer Tadahiko Hayashi as promotional materials.

Senzo Irifentei

Irfentei Senzo will perform "Saigofuda" for the first time, and also reprise "The Left Arm," also a Seicho work. Guests include Shoraku Hayashiya (paper cutter) and Yorimitsu Sakamoto (katsudo benshi).
