Sora Dayori Studio Inc. (Head office: Yao City, Osaka; Representative: Ichiro Akagi), a company that plans, develops, and sells products related to space culture, has created the world's first space gold leaf that has traveled through space and returned, and floats it on the Daiginjo-shu of Sennenichi Shuzo, a brewery on Awaji Island. It will be released on March 1, 2024. A portion of the proceeds will be used to support reconstruction efforts in the Noto Peninsula and Fukushima.

Project Background

The massive earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear power plant accident of March 2011, which is said to occur only once in a thousand years, have left the Tohoku region still in the process of reconstruction. Tohoku is still on an endless road to recovery. In addition, a major earthquake hit the Noto Peninsula on January 1, 2024.

We, Sora Dayori Studio, have implemented an unprecedented plan to support the reconstruction of these disaster-stricken areas. We are going to send gold leaf from Ishikawa to space and create "Space Kinpaku Daiginjo," a sake made with gold leaf floating on top of the best sake, for people all over Japan to buy. With the cooperation of the One Earth Foundation, which is at the forefront of the cultural use of space, the space flight was realized with the involvement of Japanese, U.S., and even European space agencies. As for the sake, the Sennenichi Sake Brewery on Awaji Island, which suffered unprecedented damage in the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, has stepped up to the plate. The brewery, which has been preserving traditional techniques for more than 100 years on Awaji Island, said, "Thanks to the help we received from all over Japan during the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, we were able to resume brewing sake. Now it is our turn to support the affected areas.

Thus began the story of sending a cheer for reconstruction from Awaji Island, which overcame the earthquake, through a space journey. Space Kinpaku Daiginjo is the only one of its kind in the world. Drinking support for reconstruction is now on the move.

There is a reason why it is the only one in the world.

There are three reasons why the Space Kinpaku Daiginjo-shu is the only one of its kind in the world.

First, it contains gold leaf that has traveled through space. Japan, the United States, and Europe cooperated to launch the gold leaf into space, where it was stored on board the International Space Station, orbited the earth, and returned safely to earth. Without going into scientific logic, can we say that this is a power gold that contains the romance of space and the life force of Mother Earth? Of course, the sake that floats this gold leaf must be Japan's finest sake. Those who drink it will be lured into a blissful euphoria just by thinking about the romantic journey of the gold leaf.

The second is a passion for reconstruction: an encounter with the Sennenichi Sake Brewery, which was hit hard by the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, but with the support of those around it rebuilt its brewery and stubbornly continued to brew sake. Awaji Island is the island of the birth of the nation that adorns the beginning of the Kojiki, and from here, it is a glorious cheer for the Tohoku and Fukushi islands that are striving for reconstruction, and for Noto that is being revived.

The third is a miraculous collaboration of professionals from different fields. Golden Valor Corporation of Kanazawa, which devised a way to reduce the volume of gold leaf to fit into a container that would go to space; Japan Manned Space Systems Corporation (JAMSS), which made it possible to secure space flight opportunities and incorporate it into experimental equipment to be installed in a European Space Agency module; the General (JAMSS), who coordinated the entire project; One Earth Foundation; Sennenichi Sake Brewing Company, which makes the best sake; the calligrapher Mr. Nandake, who kindly agreed to write the word "tether"; and Dream Network Activity, a limited company in Takamatsu, which created the space design. It is because these leading experts in different fields were united by a bond of passion for reconstruction that this exceptional sake was completed.

We, too, are based on the philosophy that companies should sell "missions" through their products, and this time, a part of the proceeds will be used for the reconstruction of the Noto Peninsula and Fukushima disaster-stricken areas.

■Technical Information

Preparation of space gold leaf

The process of folding 36 layers of gold leaf (approx. 1/1,000 mm gold) into the size of an extremely small rocket loading container (internal capacity of 16 x 58 x 4 mm).

After returning to Japan, gold leaf craftsmen in Kanazawa spread them out and make them 1/10th thicker so that they can be shattered into pieces and put into sake.

As you can see in the photo, I felt a strange connection when I saw "Teru Uchu" written on a straw barrel of sake placed at the entrance.

When I met with President Uenoyama and talked about this project, he said, "We were saved by so many people at the time of the Great Hanshin Earthquake. It is our turn to return the favor." He readily agreed to participate in the project.

Daiginjo "Chiyonichi-no-Mien" won gold medals at the National New Sake Competition five times in 2000, 2001, 2011, 2012, and 2015. Therefore, we decided to float space gold leaf on the base of this "Chiyodai no En" for this space gold leaf sake project.
