Shinagawa Aquarium (Shinagawa, Tokyo; Director: Masakatsu Suzuki) will hold a special spring exhibition, "Kai pinch, string, and pull," focusing on shellfish, which are often seen in everyday life but have many unknown charms. ~The exhibition will be held from March 20, 2024 (Wed., holiday) to May 6, 2024 (Mon., holiday).
This exhibition will feature 80 shells of about 18 species. Through panels, visitors will be able to learn about the amazing ecology and taste of shellfish, which are often considered to be the most unassuming of aquarium creatures, in an easy-to-understand manner. There will also be a shellfish (kaitenzushi) corner where visitors can learn what shellfish they usually eat look like in their natural state.
In addition, there will be a corner introducing "shell matching," a traditional Japanese game, and products made from shells.
In addition, a shell-playing stamp rally will be held in the museum, where visitors can learn about shellfish and the creatures that use them. In addition, while listening to an explanation of the history of pearls and the process of pearl production, visitors will be able to extract pearls from the pearl oyster (solution) (*Only available on certain days; fee: 1,500 yen).

Exhibit of living shellfish

A shellfish stamp rally is held to introduce the shellfish that are permanently exhibited in the museum and the creatures that use them.

Pearl oyster (solution) theory + pearl extraction experience
In addition to the history of pearls and the process of pearl production, staff members provide detailed explanations about the marine environment and other topics. Visitors can learn about shells and pearls. In addition, visitors can try their hand at extracting pearls from the Akoya pearl oyster. Visitors can take home the pearls they extracted. In addition, instruments used in pearl cultivation will also be on display.
