Robot Consulting Inc. (headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo; Hidetoshi Yokoyama, Chairman and CEO; hereinafter "Robot Consulting") held a conversation with Masaru Wakasa, a lawyer and former politician. The discussion consists of two parts, Part 1 and Part 2, and two videos, "[Part 1] Can AI become lawyers?
Part 1: Can AI Become a Lawyer?
Part 2: How Will Lawyers Utilize AI?
In the dialogue, Yokoyama, as a business manager, and Wakasa, as a lawyer and former politician, will delve into each topic from their perspectives regarding the ongoing delays in the digitization of the judiciary, the strengths of humans that AI does not have, and the strengths of AI in the judiciary and the state of the judiciary in the virtual space.
Mr. Yokoyama pointed out the delay in the digitalization of the judiciary, saying that while the U.S. is so advanced in IT that everything from issuing warrants to filing claims can be completed digitally, civil trials in Japan take a considerable amount of time due to the scheduling of cases between plaintiffs and defendants and the wait for trial order in the analog system.
In contrast, Mr. Wakasa said that civil cases can be typified and patterned, and thus promotion of IT can be expected. On the other hand, he said that digitalization, including the introduction of AI, may be slow because of the fear that the advancement of IT may invade one's field of practice and that the legal profession will be covered by AI in the future and that lawyers will no longer be needed in the flesh.
Mr. Yokoyama also stated that even with the advancement of digitalization, not all areas will be replaced by AI, and that the value of the analog side of the law is also increasing in areas where AI excels, areas where only humans can do it, and areas that reflect the human mind and psychological factors due to the advancement of digitalization. In other words, the value of the analog aspect is increasing.
Based on the above, Robot Consulting, under the philosophy of "democratization of law," will utilize AI, including large-scale language models (LLM), and aim to realize legal consultation around the world from the shallowly established laws of the metaverse space through the development of "robot lawyers.
