Background

Although more than 90% of children in the 5th grade cut their nails by themselves*, many of them grow up without knowing why they have to cut their nails or how to do it correctly. As a result, some children scratch themselves or their friends, and some suffer injuries such as broken or peeled nails. In some cases, over-cutting can cause the nails to change shape.

This class was started in the hope that children would learn the importance of nails and the correct way to trim them, so that they can live their lives with safe and healthy nails. We also hope that the children who take this class will become familiar with Japan's world-class cutlery industry, and we hope that as many of them as possible will be involved in the development of local industry in the future.

Since last year, we have been conducting the "Story of Nails and Cutting Nails" at all elementary schools in Seki-shi, Gifu Prefecture, and have been able to teach approximately 1,350 fifth- and sixth-grade students the reasons for cutting nails and the correct way to cut them. This year, we are planning to tell the story to 5th and 6th graders all over the country.
