YUKOKESHI LABORATORY (Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture), which produces unique and coquettish new kokeshi dolls, began selling "Dakkoshite Nade" on May 22, 2012, which won the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation Award at the 66th All Japan Kokeshi Doll Contest.

Thoughts on the creation of this work

I decided on the title "Dakko to nade nade" after I completed the work. I decided on the title "Dakko to nade nade" after it was completed because I felt like I was "carrying" a cat in my arms. In the early Showa period, kokeshi dolls were carried by children and played with. I had always wanted to go back to this starting point and make a kokeshi that could be played with rather than displayed on a shelf. This is the first time for me to make a kokeshi of this size, but I think I did a good job. In painting, it is said that a sleeping cat is a symbol of peace in Nikko's "Sleeping Cat. Knowing this, I painted a sleeping face in hopes for world peace. The black cat is awake, but it is also a blessed cat and a symbol to ward off evil. The body is not painted. A special paint is used to produce the cat's coat with the grain of the wood. It is oil-based natural paint that protects the wood surface, so it is safe to lick. Please "pet" them a lot without worrying about the color fading.
