Unique works by Yayoi Kusama, Chagall, and Klimt to be gathered in one place! Mallet Auction on July 18 at Hanzomon, Tokyo

M-Live Auction, where bidders can bid from their smartphones and PCs using the Online Live Bidding System, will also be held on the same day.

Mallet Japan, Inc.

Mallet Japan, Inc. will hold Mallet Sale #240718 in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo. Two auctions will be held on the same day: live-streaming "M-Live Auction" and regular "Mallet Sale" at the venue.

The following is an introduction of some of the highlights from the approximately 200 works to be auctioned.

Auction Catalogue

This catalogue's front and back covers are featured with unique works by Yayoi Kusama.

Yayoi Kusama, one of Japan's leading avant-garde artists, continues attracting attention even at 95.

Mallet Sale in July is fortunate to include a canvas of a yellow pumpkin (Lot 057) and a lovely sculpture (Lot 058), as well as several other works by Kusama.

Several highest records have been marked in the past Mallet Auctions, and bids from both domestic and overseas bidders are again anticipated in this upcoming sale.

Pre-auction Viewing 1

Several unique works by overseas artists will also go under the hammer.

Of particular note is Lot 113, "Nude with Left Arm Extended; Two Studies for Beethoven Frieze 'Art'" by Gustav Klimt. A unique work by Klimt is remarkably rare to be auctioned in Japan.

In 1897, Klimt founded the Vienna Secession, a group of up-and-coming artists, to rebel against the closed art world of the time.

For the exhibition on Beethoven in 1902, Klimt created a huge mural depicting Beethoven's masterpiece "Symphony No. 9 with Chorus"; the "Art" scene in the three-part mural depicts a woman with her arms outstretched, and this work is a study of the woman's arms.

After the Beethoven exhibition, Klimt left the Secession in 1905 and focused on portraits of upper-class women. This is a rare opportunity to add to the collection some of the major works Klimt left behind during his brief period of activity as a Secessionist.
