Shoin Shrine (Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan; Chief Priest: Yoichiro Shirakami) has started a crowdfunding campaign on CAMPFIRE on June 14, 2024 for the purpose of making large-scale repairs to its historical sites, including "Shoukasonjuku," which is located on the shrine grounds and is designated as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. The project reached its goal of 5 million yen on June 27, 2024.

The most popular course in terms of amount was the 30,000 yen course, which includes a special limited edition red seal book, a Kokorozamamori (a prayer book), and related books, while the second most popular course was the 250,000 yen course, which includes a visit to the former residence where Shouin Sensei was imprisoned and a lecture by a priest at the "Shoukasonjuku" (both facilities are World Heritage sites and closed to the public). The course was priced at 250,000 yen.

The next goal is 7 million yen, which will enable the repair of the torii gate in front of the main shrine.

Shoin Sensei

Background of the project: A number of historical sites that were damaged by the Corona disaster and repeated lightning strikes, and that convey the spirit of the Meiji Restoration to the present day.

More than 180 years have passed since both "Shoukasonjuku" and "Yoshida Shouin's Former Residence" were built, and they are showing severe deterioration. Although repair work has been carried out many times, it has been very difficult to raise funds for repairs due to the extremely difficult situation in which the number of visitors decreased by 70% during the Corona period and the cost of construction materials has skyrocketed.

We have been trying to overcome this situation by publicizing the temple on our website and distributing special red seals to encourage more people to visit the temple, but this has not been enough to compensate for the aging of the building. We would like to ask for your help through crowdfunding.

Among the buildings in need of repair, we would like to give priority to the following three.

1) Matsushita-murajuku (UNESCO World Heritage Site): A private school that produced a large number of people who achieved the Meiji Restoration.

2)Former residence of the Sugi family (UNESCO World Heritage Site): A three-and-a-half-mat room where Shoin spent his life under house arrest.

3)Tea ceremony room "Kagetsuro": Tea ceremony room built by Shigenari Mori, the 7th lord of the Hagi domain
