Singing Cafe Tomoshibi

Background

<What is a singing cafe?

In 1954, a group of students sang along to a Russian folk song record that happened to be playing in a small public diner in front of Seibu Shinjuku Station, which led to the birth of singing voice cafes. Amid the vibrant postwar reconstruction, singing cafes quickly captured the hearts of young people and became so popular that they are now known as a national boom.

When Haruka Ariji, the representative of the group, participated in the "Kounan Gymnastics" held in a community in Unnan City, she saw many elderly people gathered around, singing and moving their bodies happily to the accompaniment of enka (traditional Japanese folk songs). This was the inspiration for this project.

Features

Professor Motoyuki Yuasa of Juntendo University's Global Health Research Laboratory, to which Haruka Ariji belongs, will deliver a keynote lecture. Currently, we are conducting a comparative study of spiritual health of the elderly in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, and are conducting a questionnaire survey of people aged 65 and over living in Unnan City. By collecting data on the purpose of life, we can learn about a new way of life and health that is created from a deeper inner perspective.
