About CERASTA 2024

Tiles have been developed as building materials since ancient times. In Japan, imported tiles spread during the Meiji period (1868-1912), and the history continued with the rise of domestically produced tiles in the 1950s. However, due to the homogenization and rationalization of building materials in recent years, tiles are being replaced by other building materials. Therefore, we have planned this event in the hope that the appeal of tiles will be reintroduced, that tile culture will be built and people's lives will be enriched, that the industry will continue to prosper, and that children will aspire to work with tiles by giving them dreams of a career in the tile industry.

In the early Showa period (the so-called "Great Osaka"), Osaka was more economically booming than Tokyo, and was a major consumer of tiles. Reflecting the visionary architects' desire to build strong, long-lasting buildings, many buildings had exterior walls made of tiles, and even during World War II, such buildings were able to survive because they suffered relatively little damage from air raids. At that time, there were many shops dealing in Setomono in the Awaza and Honmachi areas in the center of the city, and the local citizens had a deep understanding of pottery. Tile makers were also concentrated in the area, and the buildings of those days remain today thanks to the understanding of tiled buildings and the affection of the local citizens.

The venue of this event, Osaka City Central Public Hall (completed in 1918), is one of the buildings from that period, and we will take the first step toward the creation of tile culture in Japan in this building where we can feel the history since 1922, when the name "tile" was officially unified.

The logo compares tiles, which are baked at high temperatures to increase their strength and stay with us for a long time, to the phoenix, a bird that flies into the fire to gain eternal life. The design was created by Shino Suefusa, an artist who expresses herself by burning paper.
