Nikken Corporation (Head Office: Yao City, Osaka; President: Koji Yashiki) will fully launch its reuse sales site "NIKKEN SDGs" on September 2, 2024, as a new step toward the realization of a sustainable society. However, by reevaluating these materials as reusable resources, NIKKEN SDGs will purchase, maintain, and sell them for reuse, thereby eliminating the waste of resources and contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions generated during waste disposal. We will contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions at the time of waste disposal.

The impetus for commercialization came from a question: "What? Are you disposing of these materials? What a waste!

We are a trading company that sells construction materials and subsidiary materials. We visit job sites directly for sales and deliver products by our own delivery service, so we have many opportunities to talk directly with people on site. When the construction of a large site was nearing completion, we visited the site to greet the person in charge who had taken care of the site.

At the site, many of the construction materials we had sold had been taken back to the industrial waste contractor. Considering storage and management costs, we had no choice but to dispose of these materials. It is a waste to waste materials that can still be used..." Nikken responded to this problem. Nikken is responding to this problem by using its unique network of daily connections with many construction sites to purchase unneeded materials and provide them to sites where they are needed for new construction projects at reasonable prices, thereby promoting recycling of materials and reducing environmental impact.

NIKKEN SDGs" is an initiative that goes beyond the mere buying and selling of materials to combine the environmental benefits of reuse with the economic benefits of curbing industrial waste disposal costs. By creating new value from materials that were destined to be discarded, we will contribute to the sustainability of society as a whole and fulfill our responsibility to the future by changing the sense of "what a waste" to "better" value.

We are able to offer a wide variety of products because we are directly connected to the "frontlines. Our customers are pleased that they can purchase good products at low prices.

One of the strengths of our reuse sales business is that we sell materials to numerous construction sites, both large and small, in the Kinki region and deliver almost all of them by our own delivery service. This allows us to keep track of what is going on at the site, and instead of just waiting for inquiries from potential buyers, we can always approach them and say, "We are ready to buy," thereby ensuring a wide variety and quantity of products, even reused items. We maintain the purchased products as much as possible, so you can use them with peace of mind.

We have already introduced this service to our existing customers and have received favorable feedback from them that they can purchase good products at a reasonable price. In order to meet their expectations, we have been strengthening our purchase activities in the Osaka area, and will expand to neighboring prefectures in the future.

We have received comments from customers who wonder if the reused products are really usable and would like to see them with their own eyes before purchasing them. Also, because the products are on-site supplies, even if the product price itself is inexpensive, the volume is large and shipping costs are high, resulting in some cases in higher prices. In addition to sales through the e-commerce site, Nikken can also visit customers to check the products and pick them up directly from the site (appointment required).

Future Development

In addition to construction materials and sub-materials, there are many other items that can still be used onsite, such as safety equipment and uniforms. We will continue to increase the number of items we purchase and at the same time hone our maintenance skills so that we can reuse and sell more products. Currently, the only pick-up location for reused products is the head office (Yao City, Osaka Prefecture), but we will increase customer convenience by offering pick-up services at other business locations as well.

There was actually some controversy within the company about the commercialization of "NIKKEN SDGs," and there was some concern that it might affect our business performance because we would not be able to sell the products we should be selling (new products). However, since we started this initiative, our existing customers have been happy to hear that we can reduce their industrial waste disposal costs, and this has led to an increase in new transactions, which has had a positive impact on our business performance. Currently, most of our customers are in the industry, but the safety products used in the field, for example, are also useful to the general public in many situations. If our reused products are chosen as an option for purchase at such times, I think it will be good for society as a whole. We will continue to expand our efforts to turn "mottainai ne" into "better" in the future.
