Mallet Japan December Auction
株式会社マレットジャパン
Mallet Japan will host an auction of Modern and Contemporary Art on December 12, 2024. The auction will feature two separate sales: an online-exclusive livestream auction; M-Live Auction, as well as a traditional on-site auction. Both sales will take place on December 12.
●Auctioned Artworks
The December Auction will feature approximately 230 artworks. Below are some of the highlights of the upcoming auction.
The first featured work is Lot 010, San Francisco Silverspot from Andy Warhol's Endangered Species series. Created in 1983, this series of 10 silkscreen prints highlights animals considered endangered at the time. The collection includes iconic species such as the giant panda and African elephant, depicted in bold designs at the center of each print. Warhol referred to the animals as "animals in makeup" because their colors were deliberately altered. This particular lot showcases the Callippe Silverspot Butterfly, typically yellow or white with black spots, but in Warhol's print, it is reimagined with striking purple and blue contrasts.
Next is Lot 071, Portrait of a Young Woman by André Derain. Derain, who was active in the Fauvist movement alongside Henri Matisse and Maurice de Vlaminck, later shifted his style under the influence of Cubism. After a trip to Italy in 1921, he returned to the academic art style, using calm colors to depict still life and portraits. This 1948 work, created when Derain was 68 years old, highlights the vibrancy of youth with a striking contrast between the subject’s lively skin tone and the dark background, which almost blends with her hair.
●M-Live Auction
In addition to the on-site auction, Mallet Japan will also host M-Live Auction, an online-exclusive livestream auction. M-Live Auction will feature artworks from multiples to unique pieces, with bidding starting at accessible price points. A notable piece in this auction is Lot 1014, Sealed Tower 16 by Shigeru Nishikawa. Nishikawa is currently holding a solo exhibition at Tsutaya Bookstore in Kyoto. His work focuses on buildings wrapped in construction or demolition sheets. His vibrant depictions of these covered structures express the changing dynamics of urban environments. This auction presents the opportunity to collect works by artists currently active in the art world.
