What we saw from our survey of 6,000 people exploring the state of thinning hair! Infographic! AGA (male pattern baldness) Fact-Finding Survey 2024 is now available!
Medical Organization Surveys AGA (Thinning Hair) What we found from a survey of 6,000 people exploring the situation of thinning hair! About one in two people had experienced thinning hair (AGA) by the age of 60. The incidence rate between fathers who had severe/moderate AGA and themselves is about 77% inherited from the fathers. We would like to introduce the sympathetic, useful, and surprising results of the survey to men who are suffering from thinning hair.
浜松町第一クリニック
Hamamatsucho First Clinic (Hamamatsucho Clinic: Hamamatsucho, Minato-ku, Tokyo; Director: Akihiko Takekoshi), a clinic specializing in ED/AGA treatment, has conducted a survey of 6,000 men living in Japan to find out the progression of thinning hair and their awareness of AGA (male pattern baldness), as AGA is a problem facing many Japanese men. The results of the survey were compiled into an "infographic" that summarizes the results of the survey. The results are summarized in the "AGA (male pattern baldness) Fact-Finding Survey 2024" infographic.
Survey Background
The survey on thinning hair (AGA) in Japanese men still refers to data published in 2004, which is 20 years old, so how has the progress changed in the recent past? We conducted an Internet survey of 6,000 men aged 30-59 living in Japan in June 2024 at our clinic. Thinning hair (AGA) is faced by many Japanese men, and we conducted another survey on the progression of thinning hair and their awareness of and actual condition regarding AGA. The survey also examined the "AGA inheritance rate from fathers and grandfathers" and the "relationship between lifestyle and thinning hair (AGA)".
Summary of main findings
About one in two respondents had experienced thinning hair (AGA) by the age of 60.
The incidence of AGA was about 77% inherited from fathers who had severe/moderate AGA and themselves.
Those who sleep about 7 hours have the lowest incidence of AGA (38.2%)
People who drink too much alcohol (more than 3 days a week, more than 2 drinks), more than 55% develop AGA.
What is AGA?
AGA (male pattern baldness) is a progressive alopecia that occurs in adult males and is characterized by the thinning of the "frontal" and "parietal" areas of the head compared to the temporal and occipital areas. Rather than a large amount of hair falling out at one time, the hairline of the forehead and the crown of the head gradually become thinner, and the area gradually widens with age, leading to the progression of symptoms. Thinning hair seen in adult men is often referred to as "AGA.
Survey Summary
AGA (male pattern baldness) Fact-Finding Survey 2024
Period: June 20 (Thursday) to 24 (Monday), 2024
Survey method: Internet
Survey targets: A total of 6,000 men, 2,000 each in their 30s to 50s
*The results of this survey have not been previously published, and this press release is the first time they have been made public.

AGA incidence rate
The incidence of AGA among Japanese men aged 30-59 was 2,538 out of 6,000 (42.3%), with an average of 2 out of 5 men developing AGA. The incidence of AGA was higher for each age group than in the 2004 survey.
The average age at which AGA symptoms begin to appear (weighted average) was 37.5 years old.
The incidence and progression of AGA and awareness of thinning hair (AGA) were as follows.
Q1 Have you ever had thinning hair (AGA)? (Number of respondents: 6,000)
Q2 Have you ever experienced rapid progression of thinning hair (AGA)?
(Number of respondents: 2,538 men in their 30s to 50s who have experienced AGA onset)
30s] AGA tends to progress rapidly when it develops in younger generations.
What is the Hamilton-Norwood classification?
It is the first classification of AGA (male pattern baldness) thinning hair progression patterns and the first classification of AGA progression patterns. It is based on the patterns of European and American people.
Current Hamilton-Norwood Classification
Modified for Japanese by Japanese dermatologist Iwao Takashima. Asians often have O-shaped hair loss on the top of the head from early on. In Japan, the "Takashima Classification" with the addition of "type II vertex" is mainly used for Japanese.
What is your own thinning hair (AGA) condition?
Q3 Please select the status of your own thinning hair (AGA).
If you have improved your hair loss (AGA) after treatment, please answer the question about your hair loss (AGA) before improvement.
(Number of respondents: 2,538 men in their 30s to 50s who have experienced AGA)
*Total is 6,000, including 3,462 who have never experienced thinning hair (AGA)
■ Level of thinning hair (AGA) status used in the survey
Percentage of AGA incidence in each age group】 【AGA incidence in each age group
The proportion of respondents who selected "advanced" increased with age, but even in the younger age group of 30-34 years old, the AGA incidence rate was 35.8%, and the AGA incidence rate of moderate or higher ((5)Type III or higher) was 14.3% (about 1 in 7), indicating that treatment is needed in some cases even before the age of 30. The incidence of AGA is 14.3% (about one in seven) among those with type III or older.
Symptoms other than hair loss at the onset and progression of thinning hair (AGA)
The survey asked whether there are other characteristic symptoms other than hair loss during the onset and progression of AGA, such as itchy scalp, sticky and greasy scalp, and increased dandruff.
Q4 What symptoms other than hair loss did you notice when your hair loss (AGA) symptoms started or progressed? (Number of respondents: 2,538 men in their 30s to 50s who have experienced AGA onset, multiple answers)
Symptoms other than hair loss at the onset/progression of AGA
Symptoms other than hair loss
Younger respondents in their 30s were more likely to have other symptoms other than hair loss.
Itchy scalp" and "greasy scalp" tend to cause severe thinning of hair (AGA)! Comparing people in the very early stages of AGA who chose "Type I" AGA symptoms with those in Type II and above, the percentage of both complication conditions is higher, which may be a sign of thinning hair (AGA) progression. In terms of the degree of progression, "Scalp became sticky and greasy" was selected by more than 40% of those with Type V and Type VI, which correspond to severe AGA, and the percentage tended to be slightly higher. It is advisable to be careful if you feel that your scalp has become sticky and greasy.
Supervisor's Comment.
Based on this survey, it can be said that AGA has a very high probability of developing and that any male can develop it. Particular attention should be paid to the younger generation. Even among men in their 30s, more than one out of three will develop AGA, and about 70% of them reported that their hair thinning (AGA) progressed rapidly, indicating that the younger the generation, the more likely it is that hair loss will progress rapidly. It is advisable to check the health of your scalp and hair thoroughly, and if you notice that your hairline or the top of your head is thinning, see a medical institution as soon as possible.
AGA inheritance rate from father/grandfather (paternal/maternal side)
Q5 Please tell us about your father's or grandfather's (father's or mother's) hair.
(Number of respondents: 6,000 men, 2,000 each in their 30s to 50s, 6,000 in total)
*Fathers, state of head hair in their 40s-50s.
*Both grandfathers, condition when grandfather was as young as possible, as far as they could remember
If your father and both grandfathers had severe/moderate AGA, what is the incidence of AGA in yourself?
In addition, (5)Incidence rate of type III or higher AGA
Supervisor's comments
AGA stands for Andro(male)genetic(hereditary)Alopecia(alopecia), and is known to be hereditary, but this survey revealed clear figures that it is inherited with a very high probability.
If you have a relative with thinning hair, there is a high possibility that you yourself will develop AGA, so it is important to start treatment as soon as you notice that your own hair is thinning.
Other Relationships between Lifestyle and Thinning Hair (AGA)
Relationship between sexual desire and thinning hair (AGA)
Relationship between sleep duration and thinning hair (AGA)
Relationship between alcohol consumption and thinning hair (AGA)
Relationship between hair quality at age 20 and onset of thinning hair (AGA)
Relationship between stress and thinning hair (AGA)
The results of the survey also include the relationship between body hair and thinning hair (AGA).

About Hamamatsucho Daiichi Clinic
Hamamatsucho Daiichi Clinic was established in Hamamatsucho in October 2004 by Dr. Akihiko Takekoshi, the current director of the clinic, as a clinic specializing in ED and AGA. We have decided to provide medical services only to male doctors, pharmacists, and receptionists, out of consideration for our patients who may find it difficult to discuss their male-specific problems in the presence of women.
In addition, for busy office workers, we have eliminated lunch breaks at all of our clinics so that they can come to our clinic at any time and can receive their prescriptions by coming directly to our clinic during office hours without the need for an appointment. After filling out a medical questionnaire and interviewing with the doctor, you will be able to receive your prescription in the hospital for only the cost of the medication.
As a rule of thumb, it takes about 10 minutes from the time of your visit to the time you receive your medication and leave the clinic.
Based on his years of experience and knowledge accumulated as a specialized clinic, he regularly provides the world with correct knowledge and the latest information on ED and AGA treatment, and also educates men suffering from ED and AGA.
