If the LDP won't change, I will destroy it myself.
Junichiro Koizumi, despite being called a "maverick," became prime minister with overwhelming support, a phenomenon that could be called the Koizumi phenomenon. He went head-to-head with the Heisei Kenkyukai, the largest faction within the LDP, to implement reforms such as the privatization of the postal service, and became the first prime minister in history to visit North Korea and bring the five abductees home. His decisive action was based on his strong admiration for Nobunaga Oda, whom he had admired since his school days, and his grandfather, Matajiro Koizumi, a politician with tattoos all over his body. He analyzed the current situation, thought rationally, and made decisions without losing his composure even in the midst of a heated battle. For five years and five months, he led the masses as a "charismatic figure" who stood firm in his convictions even in the face of opposition from those around him.
I don't care about my honor or my body. I will continue to fight for my country.
Shinzo Abe resigned midway through his term due to a worsening of his chronic illness, but later resumed his prime ministership. Inheriting the legacy of his grandfather, Nobusuke Kishi, a symbol of conservatism, and his father, Shintaro Abe, who passed away just before becoming prime minister, Abe has continued to push through a series of policies, including the enactment of the Peace and Security Law and the Specified Secret Protection Law. Behind his successes were the appointments of the right people in the right positions in the administration and the support of many Diet members who vowed to "support Mr. Abe" and "work for him this time. As a "charismatic figure" who was loved by the Diet members, Abe led the ruling party to victory in three lower house elections and three upper house elections, and achieved seven years and eight months of stable administration.
This book traces the paths of these two politicians, who were highly popular with the public and both built long-term administrations, but who were completely different types of politicians.
