Japan Auditory Oral School for the Deaf" will start a new school name "Reischauer Academy for Hearing and Speach" in April 2025. Reischauer Gakuen, a school for the hearing impaired, will be starting the second century of its history with a new school name in April 2025.

The Japan Auditory Oral School for the Deaf (located in Machida City, Tokyo; hereinafter referred to as "Japan School for the Deaf and Hearing") will change its name to "Reischauer Gakuen," the School for Hearing and Speach, effective April 2025, while keeping the corporate name as it is. The decision to change the name of the school was made with the hope that the hearing-led human education that has been cultivated over the past 100 years will be known to more people and delivered to children who need it.

In addition, the Child Development Support Center attached to the school will be renamed the "Kikoe Support Center," and after-school daycare services and daycare center visitation support services will be started (planned) to enhance support for hearing-impaired children in the community.

About Japan School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Since its founding in 1920, the Japan School for the Deaf and the Hearing Impaired has been a pioneer in the education of children with hearing disabilities in Japan as a school that makes the most of the remaining hearing ability of children with hearing disabilities and provides education in listening and speaking without the use of sign language.

Over the past 100 years, the social environment surrounding the hearing impaired, medical care, and hearing aid technology have undergone dramatic changes, and many hearing impaired children now attend ordinary kindergartens and schools. However, a high level of expertise is still required to educate children with hearing disabilities. In this context, there are many hearing impaired children who live in between inclusive education and sign language education and need specialized education that makes the most of their hearing.

We will continue to believe in the possibilities of hearing-led human education and make a new start with the determination to move forward as a school that evolves on top of its traditions.
