Background
One day, we received a brand-new komon (everyday kimono) from a customer and heard that many komon were being thrown away and that there was "no place to wear kimono in Osaka. We then began to create opportunities for people to wear kimonos in Osaka.
Then, housewives who saw our Instagram posts began to gather one after another, saying, "This looks like fun. The steady housewives participated in the event wearing their mother's kimonos or kimonos they had purchased from recycled sources. Eventually, they began taking pictures, making mizuhiki accessories, and making obis and bags from donated fabrics, all from the planning stage.
Participants in the event commented that there were housewives raising children just like them, that they were enjoying themselves with free ideas and not being bound by stereotypes of kimono, and that unlike events created by the kimono industry, there was no pushy sales pitch. We now have more than 1,200 followers on Instagram and 200 registered members on our official LINE.
This has shown us that there is demand for kimonos to be worn whenever the opportunity arises, and that kimonos are a very SDG-friendly item that can be passed down from generation to generation. We hope that more and more people will become aware of this activity and incorporate kimonos into their daily outings, and we are planning the following event at the Central Public Hall as an event to introduce Japanese culture not only to Japanese people but also to people overseas during the Osaka-Kansai Expo, which will be held during this period. We are preparing for the event at the Central Public Hall as an event to promote Japanese culture not only to Japanese people but also to people overseas.
