Space Medical Accelerator, a general incorporated association, will hold a session "Innovations in Medicine through the Crossover of the Pharmaceutical Healthcare Industry and Space Business" at SPACETIDE 2025 in Toranomon, Tokyo, July 7-10, 2025, where leading players will discuss the space business in the pharmaceutical healthcare field. The session will be powered by Space Medical Accelerator.

SPACETIDE 2025

SPACETIDE is one of the largest international space business conferences in the Asia-Pacific region, launched in 2015, and this year, its 10th anniversary, is expected to attract more than 1,800 participants and 200 speakers from Japan and abroad.

Currently, the Japanese government is promoting support for domestic pharmaceutical manufacturers and drug discovery startups, as well as encouraging the development of innovative medical devices originating from Japan, under the slogan "Japan as a Nation of Drug Discovery.

Meanwhile, there are high expectations for the space business as a catalyst for the creation of new industries in Japan, as evidenced by the establishment of the Space Strategic Fund, which will invest approximately 1 trillion yen over 10 years from 2024 in research and development institutions such as universities and companies.

Although "space" and "pharmaceutical healthcare" are two important industries that will play a key role in the future of the nation, there seems to be no major movement to organically link them in Japan at this point.

However, pharmaceutical development research that takes advantage of the microgravity of space has not lost its usefulness in obtaining detailed structural information through the generation of high-quality protein crystals or improving the solubility of drugs to make them easier to reach the affected area, even as the use of AI to predict the structure of new drug candidate substances has made dramatic progress.

In addition, technologies such as medical testing equipment required in space, where medical resources are inadequate, are expected to make a significant contribution to underpopulated medical regions on the ground.

In fact, overseas, major pharmaceutical companies such as Eli Lilly and Merck are participating in space experiments one after another for research and development, and are acquiring valuable data that cannot be obtained on the ground, which can be used to improve the characteristics of drugs.

Therefore, this session is powered by Space Medical Accelerator, in collaboration with SPACETIDE. The speakers will include a major Japanese pharmaceutical healthcare company that has experience in space experiments and is interested in future space applications and markets, as well as a leading start-up from overseas that is working on a business that makes use of space experiments. They will talk about the current position of the pharmaceutical healthcare field in the space business.

The event will also provide a forum for discussion and networking on what is needed for more players to participate in the space business in the medical healthcare field and create new value for future astronauts and ground-based medicine.
