WANBOX, a pet hotel, dog kindergarten, and other pet-related services provider in Akita Prefecture, plans to relocate its store in order to create an evacuation facility where dogs and cats can feel safe during disasters. Crowdfunding for the relocation will be held on CAMPFIRE until July 31, 2025 (Thursday).

■Background of Crowdfunding Challenge

During the torrential rain disasters that hit Akita Prefecture twice in 2023 and 2024, our facility took care of dogs that could not go to evacuation centers.

From this experience, we learned that in times of disaster, it is even more important to be close to dogs than in normal times.

Dogs taken care of at the time of the torrential rain disaster showed signs of anxiety at night. By having the dogs stay in the same space at night, we can smoothly respond to any changes in the dogs.

Creating a space that suits the dogs

Our facility accepts all breeds of dogs, from large dogs to small dogs. And just as people have their own personalities, so do dogs. We provide a variety of spaces, from private rooms to open free spaces, to create a safe environment for all dogs.

Outdoor environment

Some dogs can only urinate outside, and their habits may be disrupted by stress immediately after a disaster. We will set up a semi-outdoor area to shelter them from the wind and rain, and create an environment where they can walk and exercise regardless of the weather.

■Cats can also be accepted

The encounter with our signboard cat "Nyasuke" was triggered by the fact that on July 10, 2024, around 4:00 p.m., many people stopped in front of the store, so we went outside and found him wedged in a gap in the concrete wall. Our trainer became the mother, and our signboard dog, Kogoro, became the older brother, and is now working at the store as a signboard cat, although irregularly.

It is not only dogs that are not accepted at the shelter. Many cats are also unable to stay with their owners. We have received many requests for a facility that can also take in cats.

After the relocation, we will create a store that can welcome cats as well. We will provide separate spaces for dogs and cats so that they can spend their time in a safe and comfortable environment.
