About "Mechanical Heritage

The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME) established this program in commemoration of the 110th anniversary of JSME to recognize "Mechanical Engineering Heritage" (Mechanical Heritage) of historical significance in terms of mechanical engineering in Japan, to preserve them as cultural heritage and to hand them down to the next generation. In principle, the Mechanical Engineering Heritage is to be recognized in the following four areas: (1) Sites (mechanical heritage comprising historical landscapes), (2) Landmarks (symbolic buildings and structures including machinery), (3) Collections (preserved and collected machinery), and (4) Documents (machinery-related documents with historical significance). Candidates submitted and recommended by members are selected and evaluated by the "Mechanical Heritage Committee," and after a comprehensive evaluation by the "Mechanical Heritage Supervisory Committee," the candidates are finally narrowed down and those approved by the Board of Directors are recognized and awarded as "Mechanical Heritage".

The candidates for the next year, 2026, are currently being sought. For a list of the Mechanical Engineering Heritage sites that have been recognized to date, please visit the Society's website at https://www.jsme.or.jp/kikaiisan/.
