Children Refuse to Eat in Times of Disaster? The Importance of "Delicious Preparation
As preparation for a huge Nankai Trough earthquake becomes an urgent issue, "rolling stock," in which people stock a little more food than usual and buy more as they consume it, has been attracting attention as a disaster prevention measure that can be taken at home.
Past disasters have brought to light the issue of "children under stress who refuse to eat the emergency food provided at evacuation sites because they are not accustomed to eating it. Experts and the Cabinet Office's guidelines state that, precisely because it is a time of disaster, preparing "familiar and tasty food" that children can eat with peace of mind will help them take care of their minds and bodies.
The number of participants increased 20-fold! Disaster Prevention Factory Tour" combines "Delicious" and "Learning
Bread Wonder Factory, a bakery located a 6-minute walk from Gifu Hashima Station from where you can see the Shinkansen bullet train, offers fun and educational factory tours for parents and children to learn about "Mamorun Pan," a delicious bread that can be stored for a long time but still be eaten in case of emergency. When the program started last July, there were only about 10 participants per month, but word of mouth spread, and by July of this year, the number of participants had increased 20-fold to over 200 parents and children. The program has become so popular that it is already fully booked during this year's summer vacation.
It all started with a high-end bread specialty store opening in 2020. While gaining popularity due to the demand for Corona Disaster's nest egg, the company was faced with the issue of food loss. Therefore, the development of canned bread that can be preserved for a long time was started with the desire not to waste good bread. Initially, the goal was to reduce food loss, but the demand for stockpiled delicious disaster-prevention food has rapidly increased as a way to prepare for the growing Nankai Trough earthquake and as a practical product for rolling stock that can be made at home.
During the factory tour, visitors can take a guided tour of the bread production process and sample tasty canned bread. In addition, an original picture book about the importance of mutual aid in times of disaster is read aloud, providing an opportunity for children to naturally develop a spirit of mutual aid.
Disaster Prevention Experience that Responds to "What If My Child Were Alone?
Children who tasted the chocolate bread said, "Chocolate bread is so delicious! It's so fluffy and sweet, I want some more! The children who tasted the bread were full of smiles and said, "Chocolate bread is so delicious!
Parents also commented, "I have been looking for a tasty and safe canned bread for my egg-allergic children. This bread is delicious! and happily ate the whole can in no time. I finally found bread that I can stockpile with peace of mind." I want to have this bread on hand not only for emergencies, but for everyday snacks as well." The bread is also attracting attention as an opportunity to make disaster prevention an everyday part of the family life.
A representative said, "Disasters do not always happen when you are with your mother or father. Even if a child is alone when a disaster strikes, we want the child to escape with at least one of these tins of bread. We hope that the factory tour is not just a tour, but a place where children can naturally develop the ability to survive and the spirit to help each other."
