Features of Hagi-Yaki

Hagi-yaki, with a 400-year tradition, is a type of pottery produced mainly in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and is recognized as a national traditional craft. Characterized by its gentle earthiness, it is highly valued in the world of the tea ceremony, where it is known as "Ichiraku, Hagi, and Karatsu.

Hagi ware is also known as "Hagi no Nanake," or "Hagi's seven beauties," because of the fine cracks, called kannyu, on the surface of the ware, which change in texture as it is used.

Today, as lifestyles change, there is an increasing demand for tableware that adds color to dining and living in daily life. Hagiyaki ware has been produced to meet the needs of the times and is supported by a wide range of people.

From October 11 to 13, many events will be held in Hagi City at the same time as the Hagi Tamachi Hagiyaki Festival. There will be "Kimono Week in Hagi," a stroll through the elegant castle town of Hagi in kimonos, "Hagi Bamboo Lantern Story," in which the candlelight of bamboo lanterns will illuminate the historic streets, "The Power of Yakimono," an exhibition of works by 69 artists who are members of the Hagi Potters Association, and many other events to enjoy! The first 50 visitors to the Hagi/Tamachi Hagiyaki Festival dressed in kimonos will receive prizes.
