From Kochi! Space Pear Project Launched! - The fruit of the future, nurtured by pollen that has traveled through space

Niitaka Pear, the largest pear in Japan, will take on the space challenge. The "story of the pear" nurtured in space will finally come to fruition on September 18, 2025 (Thursday).

Space x Agriculture x Kochi Challenge

(Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative: Kazuhiko Maeda), together with a local Kochi Prefecture company, Rienta Corporation (located in Nashienada, Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture; Project manager: Kazusui Okada), launched Niitaka pear pollen into space by a rocket. The pollen reached an altitude of about 250 km and returned to Earth after a six-minute stay in space, including a zero-gravity environment. Pollen from the returned "space pollen" was used to pollinate and cultivate the pears, which are now available in limited quantities.

Niitaka pears, also known as "Japan's largest pears," are a Kochi-born brand, characterized by their large size (sometimes over 1 kg per pear), elegant sweetness, and freshness. This special fruit has further evolved through space pollen, and is now about to be born as the one and only "Space Pear.

The "Pollen Space Travel Certificate" certifies that the fruit has been to space.

A new taste fostered by the fusion of Kochi earth and space

Attention is focused on the unknown effects of pollen that has experienced the extreme environment of space, and we are watching for differences in the development, aroma, and taste of the fruit, including future analysis.

Currently, the fruit is growing well. The fruits, pollinated by space pollen, are growing just like "pears that trace the memory of the universe. They are being carefully nurtured for harvest and sales in the fall.

This project was implemented as an effort to explore new possibilities for fruit under the theme of the fusion of space and local resources.

The pear pollen was launched by a rocket from SSC: Swedish Space Corporation on November 26, 2024.
