Mallet Japan October Auction
Mallet Auction
Mallet Japan will host its upcoming auction of Modern and Contemporary Art on Thursday, October 2, 2025, in Tokyo.
The auction will consist of two sales held on the same day: the online-exclusive livestream M-Live Auction and the in-person Modern & Contemporary Art Sale #251002.
Among the 243 works to be auctioned, we will introduce some of the highlights.
Preview Session
The October auction will feature two prints by Roy Lichtenstein, a leading American Pop Art artist.
LOT021, "Foot and Hand," is an offset lithograph created in 1964. Lichtenstein employs the "Benday Dot" technique used in comics and commercial printing at the time, using tiny dots to represent color. The boot stomping on the hand reaching for the pistol is a truly comic depiction and is one of the most important early works in Lichtenstein's signature dot-based style.
LOT022, "The Oval Office," a large silkscreen work, was produced in 1992 as part of a project related to the U.S. presidential election. Lichtenstein was one of several artists involved in the project to support the Democratic candidate. He researched the Oval Office at the time and reproduced its decorations and even the paintings in great detail.
Preview Party
Next on view are the canvas works by Manabu Mabe in LOT111 and LOT112.
Mabe was born in Kumamoto Prefecture in 1924 and immigrated to Brazil with his family when he was 10 years old. While working on a coffee plantation, he learned oil painting from Japanese American painters between farm work shifts and gradually began to pursue an artistic career.
In his twenties, he was selected for an art exhibition, demonstrating his talent early on.
In the 1950s, he turned to an abstract style and won international acclaim when he was awarded the Best Painter Prize at the São Paulo Biennale in 1959. He continued to live and work in Brazil for the rest of his life.
His works are characterized by vivid colors and bold compositions. The works in this October sale were created during the artist's later years.
Since its inception, Mallet Japan has actively sought to appeal to overseas customers.
We have been sharing information and inviting bids from collectors around the world for works by Japanese artists active overseas, as well as works by foreign artists who are not yet well known in Japan.
