Understanding the BANI Era
What is BANI?
BANI is a concept proposed by futurist Jamais Cascio in his 2020 paper "Facing the Age of Chaos," and is a new age-awareness frame that takes the initial letters of the following four elements.
Brittle
Anxious
Non-Linear
Incomprehensible
While the old VUCA represented "uncertainty in the external environment," BANI focuses on "internal reactions of humans and organizations." With the multilayered intertwining of AI evolution, value diversification, institutional fatigue, and the climate crisis, we are living in an era that is not "unpredictable" but "incomprehensible.
The evolutionary perspective of Positive BANI
In his book "Navigating the Age of Chaos," released in October 2025, Mr. Cascio presents an evolving view of BANI not as a "structure of fear" but as a "guide for reconstruction". This is Positive BANI (BANI+).
Brittle → Bendable
Anxious → Attentive
Non-Linear → Neuroflexible
Incomprehensible → Interconnected
This shift is an attempt to put “The ability to engage meaningfully” back at the center of the human being, rather than fearing chaos.
The era is moving from VUCA to BANI.
