enCamp, a glamping facility in Shiojiri City, Nagano Prefecture, will launch a multi-layered enhanced bear-proofing campaign, an unprecedented level in Japan, from winter 2025 in order to prioritize the safety of our guests.

Campaign Against Bears

This year, due to the nationwide increase in bear appearances, our facility also experienced approximately 600 accommodation cancellations (worth an estimated 7 million yen). However, in the 13 years since its opening, there has never been a bear sighted on the property. In response to the concerns of our customers, as a business operator, we believe that "safety is the best service" and have taken all possible measures by investing in facilities based on the knowledge of experts and scientific evidence.

Seven multi-layered bear-proofing measures (guarding the entire perimeter of 2,500 tsubo)

1. new high-voltage "electric fence" installed around the entire perimeter (2,500 tsubo)

Electric fences are considered one of the most effective means of bear damage prevention. By installing it around the entire perimeter of the site, physical intrusion is prevented.

2. installation of a vermin avoidance system of light sensor x high-frequency sound

Bears tend to avoid light and sound in dimly lit areas (morning and evening) when they are more active. Sensors are deployed at potential intrusion routes to deter bears with strong stimuli.

3) "Wolf Pea," a natural repellent made from wolf urine, is installed at 200 locations on the site.

The use of wolf urine, a natural enemy of the black bear, is expected to have a psychological repellent effect on the black bear, which has an excellent sense of smell.

4. unique location with roads surrounding the site on four sides

Bears tend to avoid human settlements and paved roads, and the location of the site surrounded by a road with heavy human flow is a structure that works in combination with other deterrents to reduce the risk of intrusion.

5. maintenance of "zero undergrowth" condition by two goats

By grazing goats, bears are physically removed from the bushes where they hide and are prevented from creating an environment where they can approach.

6. 24-hour lighting + stable human flow of more than 10,000 guests per year

Adapted to the habits of bears, the site is completely lighted even at night while maintaining a constant flow of people.

7. 13 bear sprayers approved by environmental protection agencies in all 13 buildings + 3 spares

Each building is equipped with world-standard safety equipment in case of emergency.
