The damage assumption of an earthquake directly under the Tokyo metropolitan area updated in December 2025 announced the prediction that it would cause enormous damage. (Head office: Sapporo, Hokkaido; Representative Director: Akira Ikeda), which operates a dental laboratory, is developing a nationwide "denture bank" that digitally stores denture data free of charge and allows denture fabrication outside the disaster area in the event of a disaster. In the event of a major disaster, dentures are provided free of charge. In the three years since the program began, the number of dentures stored has grown to 640 and the number of partner dental clinics has expanded to 18.

Oral care is important to prevent disaster-related deaths
We cannot wait for a large-scale disaster! Are you prepared for disasters?
An earthquake of magnitude 7 is expected to hit the Tokyo metropolitan area. The government's Central Disaster Prevention Council and the Working Group on Countermeasures against Earthquakes Beneath the Tokyo Metropolitan Area updated new damage assumptions on December 19, 2025. In the worst case scenario, the number of direct fatalities is estimated to reach approximately 18,000, and the number of disaster-related deaths, which is one of the major issues, is estimated to be up to 41,000. While the number of people who prepare water and food has increased, the number of people who prepare "oral care for eating," which can prevent aspiration pneumonia and other disaster-related deaths, is still low.

Providing Free Dentures in the Event of a Large-Scale Disaster
The "free dentures" are a great way to ensure peace of mind in just 30 minutes! From everyday loss to large-scale disasters
Ltd., which operates a dental laboratory in Sapporo, operates a free denture data storage service, "Denture Bank," in cooperation with dental clinics nationwide. In the event of a disaster, dentures can be manufactured immediately and shipped as soon as the next day, and in the event of a large-scale disaster, dentures are provided free of charge. Since its launch in February 2023, the number of dentures stored has grown to 640 and the number of affiliated dental clinics to 18, and the number is gradually increasing.
The "Denture Bank" is a service that scans dentures currently in use, digitizes the data, and stores it in the cloud. There is no fee, scanning time is about 30 minutes, and the data is stored on three servers in three different locations, including overseas. When duplicating, the data can be pulled up at partner dentists in other prefectures, so that the same dentures can be duplicated not only in the event of a disaster, but also in the event of everyday loss, moving, or even if the family dentist goes out of business.

The reality of being saved in an earthquake and dying in an evacuation center
The reason we started the denture bank was that many people died of aspiration pneumonia during the Great East Japan Earthquake. Many people were unable to take their dentures with them because they were in a hurry to escape, and many others dropped their dentures and damaged them during the evacuation process. The disaster team did its best to respond, but it took a long time to provide the dentures because the dental clinic was also damaged and medical records were swept away. Even for those who were lucky enough to have their dentures intact, it was reported that many people died of aspiration pneumonia due to the fact that they could not clean their dentures thoroughly in the evacuation centers and had to wear them for long periods of time, and that the lack of teeth made it difficult for them to eat properly and weakened their strength, leading to the focus on disaster-related death. While treating the elderly as a dentist, our representative thought of a way to quickly create an environment in which people could eat normally in an emergency. In February 2023, the company began a nationwide rollout, and as the number of affiliated dental clinics increased, it was included in a "Collection of Private Sector Initiatives for Strengthening the National Land Infrastructure" published by the Cabinet Secretariat. In addition to the operation of a mobile clinic bus equipped with storage batteries, in March 2025 we started providing dentures free of charge in the event of a major disaster.

One person who stored the data said, "I have prepared water, food, and denture cleaners in case of a disaster, but I had not thought about the possibility of losing my dentures. When I heard about the denture bank from my doctor during treatment, I thought it would be a good idea to store my dentures because it was free and I would have peace of mind in case something happened to them." One of the participants said, "I am very happy to be able to use the denture bank.
A representative said, "The possibility of a large-scale disaster happening near us is increasing. Even if we can't take out the dentures, if we have the data, we can prevent secondary disasters such as loss of strength due to inability to eat. As part of our social contribution activities, we will continue to create a system that allows people to be prepared without financial burden."
In order to eliminate the disparity in preparedness by place of residence, we will continue to promote recruitment with the goal of establishing affiliated dental clinics in all prefectures.
